Vegetables are the healthiest option to fight diabetes. These common vegetables to prevent type 2 diabetes naturally are amazing.

Type 2 Diabetes is a medical disorder in which body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin i.e. insulin resistance. Additionally, it may gradually lose the capacity to produce sufficient amount of insulin in pancreas. It is also known as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) or Type II Diabetes as well as Adult-Onset or Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes.

Several studies have shown that adopting a low-fat, plant-based diet along with exercise & healthy and active lifestyle can tackle diabetes more effectively. Sometimes, it can even reverse type 2 diabetes.

According to the 2017 Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, the American Diabetes Association maintains that a plant-based eating pattern is the most effective option to manage type 2 diabetes.

It also encourages clinicians to include education on lifestyle management. Therefore, pre-diabetic or diabetic should definitely include fresh & healthy plant foods to control diabetes. Here are 10 anti-diabetic vegetables or kitchen foods to treat type 2 diabetes naturally:

(1) Bitter Gourd (Momordica charantia)

It is one of the most beneficial vegetables to prevent type 2 diabetes naturally. Bitter gourd, also known as bitter melon or bitter squash or balsam bear, is a tropical & subtropical vine that is widely grown for its edible fruit. This widely popular plant belongs to the plant family Cucurbitaceae.

The bitter gourd fruit is found to contain at least three active substances with anti-diabetic properties. These active ingredients are charantin with blood glucose lowering effect, vicine and an insulin-like compound known as polypeptide-p (plant-insulin). These active ingredients either work alone or together to assist in reducing blood sugar levels.

Additionally, bitter gourd is known to contain a lectin that can reduce blood glucose concentration by acting on peripheral tissues. This lectin also suppresses appetite in a way similar to that of insulin in brain. This lectin is considered to be the main factor behind hypoglycemic effect that usually develops after consuming bitter gourd.

Therefore, bitter gourd helps to increase pancreatic insulin secretion as well as prevents insulin resistance. Bitter gourd is beneficial for controlling both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

According to a recent report published in the book entitled “Food as Medicine: Functional Food Plants of Africa”, dietary use of bitter melon or its juice decreases blood glucose levels.

Additionally, it also increases High Density Lipo-protein (HDL)/good cholesterol, and decrease triglyceride levels. It is the reason why bitter gourd is widely used as traditional medicine for diabetic patients.

When consumed alone, it is found to have modest hypoglycemic effect at doses of at least 2000 mg/day. Apart from treating diabetes, bitter gourd is also known to be effective in treating other chronic diseases such as cancer, Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), states a 2016 study published in the journal Current Pharmacology Reports.

How To Consume Bitter Gourd To Fight Diabetes:

Pre-diabetics or diabetics should consume bitter gourd in diet at least once in three days. You can consume it either in form of juice or smoothie of 4-5 bitter gourds every morning on an empty stomach.

Seeds can be consumed in a powdered form added in the food. One can also use bitter gourd in form of decoction prepared by boiling the pieces in water. Apart from these, you can also eat it in form of bitter gourd recipe, bitter gourd tea, dishes, curry as well as soup.

Precautions For Using Bitter Gourd:

You should make sure to limit its consumption to no more than two ounces in a day. You should also remember that it can’t be used to entirely replace insulin treatments. However, there is a major safety exception in individuals suffering from glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.

These individuals may experience symptoms of anemia, headaches, fever, stomach pain, & possibly coma. It is mainly due to the presence of vicine substance in bitter gourd.

Finally, you should not forget to consult your physician to ask about its safety for use along with prescribed diabetes medications.
