(4) Self-Tanner Or Spray Tanning
It is one of the highly popular skin care or cosmetic products to avoid during pregnancy. Spray tanning is also known as UV-free tanning or sunless tanning or self tanning or fake tanning.
It is a process of spraying fine mist of chemicals onto the body to produce an exotic effect similar to suntan. Self tanning is usually done with chemical containing Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as an active ingredient.
The US FDA has approved DHA for use in chemical tanning. It is known to act by reacting with dead layer of surface skin. It is usually considered much safer than sun tanning which in turn increases the possibility of cancer.
According to some scientific studies, DHA may be mutagenic in nature & therefore can cause DNA damage. There is no test data available publicly on developmental toxicity.
It may be a healthy practice when applied with protective measures for healthy adults. But for pregnant women, it may put risk to developing fetus due to inhalation of spray particles.
Thus, you should completely avoid spray tanning as a cosmetic treatment while pregnant. It should take this wise step as a precautionary measure to protect your baby from its harmful effects.
