(6) Chemical Hair Removing Products

It is one of the highly common beauty or cosmetic products to avoid during pregnancy. Hair removing by females from areas such as legs, underarms, bikini line & even beyond that is gaining popularity. This is mainly due to prevalent fashion trend of wearing shorter dresses & swimsuits.

Chemical hair removing products usually contain thioglycolic acid as an active ingredient. The safety of this chemical during pregnancy or breastfeeding is still unexplored.

But, EU limits the ingredients to a maximum of 5% in depilatories while in US, an independent panel Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) found safe levels of thioglycolic acid up to 15.2%.

Thioglycolic acid is known to react aggressively & chemically with disulfide bonds in hairs. So, their potential reprotoxic effects are doubtful.

Thus, as a precautionary measure pregnant or would-be mothers should avoid it during pregnancy. However, expectant mother may opt for safe alternative ways for hair removal such as plucking, shaving & even waxing.
